Christian Science was discovered in 1866 by Mary Baker Eddy. It is a system of spiritual healing, based entirely on the Bible and the works of Christ Jesus, and instituted in order to restore, in her words, “primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing.” Christian Scientists believe, as Jesus did, that an understanding of our unbroken, loving relationship with God results in fuller, happier, healthier lives for all of God’s creation, including every man and every woman.
Christian Scientists believe in one, infinite God, who is All and all-good. We believe that God is present in our lives at all times, loving us, guiding us, and caring for us. We also believe that God created us, as stated in the first chapter of Genesis in the Bible, in “His image and likeness.” We take this to mean that the genuine man (male and female) is God’s reflection, spiritual and holy, expressing the nature of God. Understanding this and learning how to apply this truth through prayer enables us to meet life’s challenges with a sense of increasing dominion.
That’s why healing is so central to our church. Christian Science explains the Science, or spiritual laws of God, that enabled Jesus to heal. These laws are still available today. The healing, saving power of God’s love makes all things possible! Through the timeless power of the Christ, no problem is too entrenched or overwhelming to be addressed and healed. The advantage of this method of spiritual healing is that it upholds the moral and ethical standards of the Bible. Christian Scientists consider the Ten Commandments, as well as Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, to be central to their lives and practice of Christianity.
One of the best ways to learn more about Christian Science is to explore the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, written by Mary Baker Eddy to explain her discovery and its relation to the Bible. This book, along with the Bible and other literature on Christian Science can be borrowed or purchased at our Reading Room.
Of course, we lovingly welcome everyone to our church on Great Plain Avenue in Needham Center. Please visit us on Sundays and Wednesdays for our healing services!
